Toyota Tundra Mud Flaps Fitment Guide: Gen 1, Gen 2 & Gen 3

Toyota Tundra Mud Flaps Fitment Guide: Gen 1, Gen 2 & Gen 3

The right Toyota Tundra mud flaps depend on your generation: Gen 1 covers 2000–2006, Gen 2 covers 2007–2021, and Gen 3 covers 2022 and newer. Each generation has different wheel wells and mounting points, so parts don't cross over. This Toyota Tundra mud flaps fitment guide shows what fits each generation, which materials are available, and how to pick your coverage.

Which Tundra Generation Do You Have?

Go by model year, not by how the truck looks:

  • Gen 1: 2000–2006. Toyota's first full-size pickup, offered in regular and extended cab versions early on.
  • Gen 2: 2007–2021. A larger truck built on a new platform. It ran for 15 model years with facelifts along the way, and Ark's Gen 2 parts are listed for the full 2007–2021 span.
  • Gen 3: 2022 and newer. A clean-sheet redesign. According to Toyota's 2022 Tundra launch materials, the new truck rides on an all-new chassis with a multi-link rear suspension that replaces leaf springs with coil springs.

That Gen 3 redesign was the Tundra's first ground-up overhaul since 2007, as Consumer Guide noted in its 2022 review. A new frame and suspension mean new wheel well geometry, which is why a Gen 2 guard won't fit a Gen 3 truck.

Splash Guards vs. Mud Flaps: Two Different Jobs

Ark makes two kinds of wheel-well protection for the Tundra, and they're easy to mix up.

  • Splash guards close the open gap between the body and the fender behind the suspension. That gap lets mud, water, and road salt into the engine bay and onto exposed components.
  • Mud flaps hang behind the tire on the outside and catch the spray and rocks your tread throws onto your doors, rockers, and quarter panels.

Many owners run both. One Gen 2 owner, for example, started with Ark splash guards and added Ark mud flaps afterward.

Toyota Tundra Mud Flaps Fitment by Generation

Gen 2 and Gen 3 Tundras have the full TriXPoly lineup, while Gen 1 trucks are covered by rubber splash guards.

Gen 1 Tundra (2000–2006)

First-gen trucks are covered by Ark's rubber splash guards, cut to the Gen 1's dimensions for both regular and extended cab trucks. They close the engine bay gap behind the suspension, which matters on trucks that see salted winter roads. Shop the 2000–2006 Tundra splash guards.

Gen 2 Tundra (2007–2021)

The Gen 2 has the deepest lineup. Rubber splash guards come in two versions:

  • Stock or Suspension Lift fits stock trucks, leveled trucks, and suspension lifts of any height.
  • 3" Body Lift is for trucks with a body lift, which changes the gap between body and frame.

On the TriXPoly side, Gen 2 owners can pick splash guards, full mudflaps, mid mudflaps, or micro flares, or combine them in a bundle. The 2007–2021 Tundra TriXPoly mudflaps give the most exterior coverage for this generation. One 2010 Tundra owner replacing factory guards that had "withered to nothing" reported a simple install with small hole adjustments in two spots.

Gen 3 Tundra (2022 and newer)

Gen 3 parts are built for the new frame and suspension:

  • Rubber front splash guards.
  • TriXPoly splash guards and rear splash guards.
  • Mudflaps, mid mudflaps, and micro flares.
  • A fuel line protection panel that shields the exposed fuel lines in the rear wheel well.

Factory flaps leave the sides of this truck exposed. As one Gen 3 owner who drives gravel roads put it, the "factory mud flaps do not protect the rear quarter panel from chips and dings." The 2022–2026 Tundra TriXPoly mudflaps address that. Another verified buyer noted their slotted mounting holes let you adjust how far the flaps stick out to cover offset wheels. Add the Gen 3 fuel line protection panel if you run gravel or trails regularly.

Rubber or TriXPoly for Your Tundra?

Both are designed, sourced, and manufactured in the USA, and both fit vehicle-specific mounting points. They differ in what they're made for:

  • Rubber is Ark's original material: 1/8" thick with a high durometer rating. Ark tested it on a 2017 Tundra for more than four years with no signs of cracking or degradation. On the Tundra, rubber is used for splash guards.
  • TriXPoly is Ark's newer high-performance poly blend. It's available in splash guards and every exterior flap style, with a choice of logo colors, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty.

If you own a Gen 1, rubber splash guards are your option. On a Gen 2 or Gen 3, the choice comes down to whether you want the original rubber splash guard or a full TriXPoly setup with matching mudflaps.

Full Mudflaps, Mid Mudflaps, or Micro Flares?

Pick your coverage based on how you drive:

  • Full mudflaps give the most coverage. They're the best fit for towing, gravel roads, winter slush, and trucks on wider tires.
  • Mid mudflaps balance real coverage with a cleaner, lower profile.
  • Micro flares give the most minimal look and cover the least tread. They're best for mostly paved driving.

If you're unsure, go longer. Chips on the rockers and quarter panels cost more to fix than a bigger flap costs to buy.

Lifted or Leveled Tundra: Avoiding Tire Rub

Most rub problems come from tire width and wheel offset, not lift height. Ark's rule of thumb: if your tires already rub the body mount bracket or crash bracket, or you've had a body mount chop, mid mudflaps and full mudflaps will likely rub too. If you haven't needed a body mount chop, you're good to go.

Before ordering, check these four things:

  1. Turn the wheel to full lock in both directions and look at clearance where the front flaps mount.
  2. If you wheel your truck, check clearance with the suspension compressed, not just parked.
  3. Note how far your tread pokes past the fender. More poke calls for more flap coverage.
  4. If you have a body lift on a Gen 2, order the 3" Body Lift splash guard version.

External reservoir shocks aren't a problem. Ark splash guards nest in behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tundra Mud Flaps

Which Tundra generation is my truck?

Use the model year. Gen 1 covers 2000–2006, Gen 2 covers 2007–2021, and Gen 3 covers 2022 and newer. The Gen 3 is a clean-sheet redesign with a new chassis and a coil-spring multi-link rear suspension, so its mud flaps and splash guards don't interchange with Gen 2 parts. Check the model year on your registration or the label in the driver's door jamb.

What mud flaps fit a 2022 or newer Tundra?

Only parts built for the Gen 3 truck. Ark offers 2022–2026 Tundra TriXPoly mudflaps, mid mudflaps, and micro flares, plus rubber front splash guards, TriXPoly front and rear splash guards, and a fuel line protection panel for the rear wheel well. Gen 2 parts won't align with the Gen 3's mounting points.

Should I choose rubber or TriXPoly for my Tundra?

It depends on your generation and what you want to cover. Gen 1 trucks use Ark's rubber splash guards. Gen 2 and Gen 3 owners can choose rubber splash guards or a full TriXPoly setup, which includes exterior mudflaps, logo color options, and a lifetime warranty. Many owners run splash guards and mudflaps together because they protect different areas.

Will mud flaps rub on a lifted or leveled Tundra?

Usually not, unless your tires already rub. Ark's rule of thumb: if you're rubbing the body mount bracket or crash bracket, or have had a body mount chop, mid and full mudflaps will likely rub too. If you haven't needed a body mount chop, you should be clear. Always check clearance at full steering lock in both directions.

Do Tundra mud flaps require drilling?

Ark's Tundra parts are designed to mount to factory locations, and in most cases they install without drilling. All hardware and instructions are included. Expect some fiddly plastic clips on certain locations; Ark includes extras. On older Gen 2 trucks, a few owners report small mounting-hole adjustments.
